Congratulations to Madeleine Hatfield for her award-winning project at the 2023 Connecticut Science and Engineering Fair! Madeline's project titled "Mytillus edulis ability to control harmful algae blooms from nitrogen-rich fertilizer" earned the following honors/awards at this year's fair:
- 1st Place in Petit Family Foundation Women in Science and Engineering
- Medalist in Life Science
- 2nd Place in Aquarion Water Company Excellence in Water Quality or Environmental Management
- 2nd Place in Connecticut Association of Conservation and Inland Wetlands Commissions Environmental Science
The Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair is a yearly, statewide science and engineering fair open to all 7th through 12th-grade students residing or enrolled in Connecticut schools and Fishers Island. An important objective of our program is to attract young people to careers in science and engineering while developing skills essential to critical thinking. Through science fair participation, students are encouraged to pursue independent work using proper research methods.
Maddie would like to give special thanks to Michelle Zimberlin, Fishers Island School science teacher, for helping collect the mussels at the Fishers Island Ferry dock and helping her collect the supplies she needed. She also would like to thank Carol Giles for helping her plan the experiment.
