Spring 2016/17 Guidance Office News n’ Notes
Hello all! As the Vernal Equinox is upon us, let's hope for more of the great weather that February gave us:) The school, staff and students are immersed in what is sure to be a productive and enjoyable spring and summer season for all. As students and staff are engrossed in the semester 2 courses, the FI learning community is in full spring mode.
Our seniors are finalizing their post secondary graduation plans, as the May 1 national deadline for selecting higher education institutions approaches. They are also excited about their upcoming senior trip! Remember seniors, weigh all college decisions and financial aid packages thoroughly, as families legally have until May 1st,2017 to make a final decision that is right for them. For students using either the Common Application, or Common Access, semester one transcripts have been uploaded by me as soon as they were available in early February. I will do the final upload immediately following graduation on 06/23/17. IMPORTANT note for senior families. I will hand all seniors their FI local Scholarship packet on Wednesday April 12th(day before senior trip departure). The scholarship deadlines(some like the St. John one are done online) are due no later than June 1st. Please call or email me with respect to any and all questions.
Moving on the underclassmen, our scheduling process is getting underway, as the 2017/18 Program of Studies booklet is being produced. Look for more information and student course selection sheets in late spring. Also, our Juniors and Sophomores received PSAT scores on 12/16/16, and will now hopefully use their personal "access codes" to begin free tutoring with the famed Khan Academy(FREE). They should also avail themselves of the free College/Career search engines that come with the scores on the College Board site. All Juniors hopefully signed up online(www.act.org) for the ACT(different than the SAT), offered on island April 8th,2017.The deadline was March 3rd,2017. The cost is $42.50, and $58.50 for the optional essay. We are also hosting the June 3rd SAT here as well. The deadline online(www.sat.org/register) signup is May 9th. The cost is $45 for the test and $57 including the essay(optional). We are not hosting Subjects tests this year, as we are a small national test center, but students can take them at the mainland sites. The cost for those is $26 to register, and $20 per test. See Mr. Amaral for details.
As always, I will be seeing all students in classes/individually, and working especially with Gr. 7/8 students in classes as they initiate their post secondary planning portfolio on Guidance Direct. Ms. Bean has password codes for all students and their families to use. It is an enjoyable software system. As you can see with our new website, there are many critical links for parents/students as well. Please call or email me with any and all questions. I look forward to working with both you and your children for the remainder of the school year! Kind regards, Gil Amaral-FI-Director of Guidance.
