FIS...cultivating and honoring the gifts & talents of ALL students

This tagline, found at the bottom of our school stationery, truly embodies our school's mission.  Our core belief is that all students have gifts and talents, and that it's our job to help students discover and explore them.

I am privileged to be at the helm of Fishers Island School. I arrived here after serving as the Superintendent in a wonderful southeastern Connecticut district of 3,500 students because I missed working directly with students and teachers.   In this unique and special environment, I have the chance to deeply know each one of my 70 preK- Grade 12 students and their families.

What makes our school unique and special is our ability to personalize teaching and learning.  As a Renzulli School-wide Enrichment model school, we are able to devote time and resources to go beyond our highly effective NY State Regents/Common Core curricula.  We regularly survey our students to find our what they are interested in learning about and offer small enrichment cluster classes to make it happen.  We seek out qualified instructors who can be students, teachers, community members These clusters represent the joy of learning as students jump in headfirst without the worry of testing or grades.

We've had hands-on enrichment clusters on 3-D Printing, cartooning, flying planes, metal casting, country line dancing, rock climbing, sailing, archaeology, music tech, improvisation and many more.  On "Cluster Days" you can literally feel the staff and student excitement in the air, as we all embark upon a journey of learning what we've chosen to explore.

It's one of the many moments that verify my decision to join this extraordinary school community.
